I think some of you know how intensely obsessed I've been with the whole Manti Te'o Fake Dead Girlfriend Hoax situation. From the minute I read the Deadspin story I was hooked, even though I've never really cared about college football. The details were too bizarre to not want to find out more. I somehow convinced Patrick's best friend Shawn to investigate the story with me and we spent days reading links and speculation from conspiracy theory sites.
The story has slowly faded over the past couple of weeks but I am still not satsified with what has come out. Manti Te'o lied; to what extent I'm not sure. He's also very stupid. Again, I'm not sure whether to label him as just wildly stupid or mind-blowingly stupid to the point of not being able to function in regular society. I'm not saying he wasn't tricked by a crazy con artist (who was also his friend??), but the fact that Te'o did not try hard to visit the love of his life when she was dying of leukemia seems strange at the very least. Why can't we have the real truth?!
I guess in the meantime I'll just have to satisfy myself with the Gregory Brothers autotune video of Manti Te'o's interview with Katie Couric. The rap part is deliciously wonderful:
