Sharp Teeth

DSC_0020

I read such a cool book this week: Sharp Teeth by Toby Barlow. I picked it up from the library because of the neat cover (the dog teeth are shiny silver) and because of positive blurbs from Christopher Moore and David Mamet. Now this is a story written in free verse. Alright, I realize I've lost about half of you. It's also a story about lycanthropes. Alright, there go the rest of you.

Seriously, though, this novel tells of the slow circling and the sharp intersections of three separate packs in modern day L.A. and of the people, guilty and guileless, who get swept up in their path. It's darkly funny, vicious, sexy and unique. Barlow uses the rhythms of poetry to create something exquisitely intense and immensely readable. I raced through this book in a few hours on Monday and I've been thinking about it a lot ever since. If you're looking for something different, something quick and tricky, this is it.

Lyric of the Week

  • Elbow - Song: Newborn

    Song: Newborn
    Elbow: Asleep in the Back

I'll be the corpse in your bathtub,
    Useless.
I'll be as deaf as a post
If you hold me like a newborn.
    Whisper what you feel.

    My badly strung declaration
    To you.
You'll spend the end of your days
    Gently smiling like a newborn.

    Love not by degrees.
